Saint Michael’s Medical Center in Newark, N.J., is using IBM’s real-time locating services, along with Sonitor Technologies’ infrastructure to track medical equipment and ensure compliance with patient safety regulations. The system will initially track more than 2,000 pieces of equipment including heart monitors, infusion pumps and ventilators using ultrasound receivers and tagging technology from Sonitor Technologies. The tags send an identification signal to receivers without the risk of interference with other patient care equipment.
The system will alert staff when equipment leaves assigned areas, when availability is running low, or if a crash carts sits in the hallway too long. The solution from IBM and Sonitor Technologies will allow caregivers to spend more time providing patient care and less time looking for the equipment they need. The system automates supply orders without the need for staff intervention, such as requesting additional infusion pumps when the number of clean pumps drops to only two.

Balluff announced the creation of a new industrial RFID tag designed to withstand temperatures as high as 200° C (392° F), for limited exposure times.
During high-temperature exposure the tags remain inactive, therefore preserving the data within. Reading and writing data ideally takes place outside of the high temperature areas at around 70° C
(158° F) or under.
The compact tag, 40 mm X 22 mm x 6.5 mm in size, is designed to be affixed to as many locations as possible and complies with the open ISO 15693 standard. Typical applications include painting and coating operations where heat sealing, oven drying, or currying may occur.
The tag enables unlimited reading and writing of data with a user memory capacity up to 112 numerical bytes or ASCII characters.

Foodproducent Greencore heeft zijn productie- en distributieproces uitgerust met RFID. ICT-manager Herman Jeurissen gaf tijdens een seminar tips aan vakgenoten. “Test goed en hou rekening met een investering van €100.000.” Deze investering is bij Greencore overigens na een jaar al terugverdiend.
