First Robotics Competition
FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) is a unique varsity sport of the mind designed to help high-school-aged young people discover how interesting and rewarding the life of engineers and researchers can be.
The FIRST Robotics Competition challenges teams of young people and their mentors to solve a common problem in a six-week timeframe using a standard “kit of parts” and a common set of rules. Teams build robots from the parts and enter them in competitions designed by Dean Kamen, Dr. Woodie Flowers, and a committee of engineers and other professionals.

Biology Image Library is een online databank met een collectie afbeeldingen, filmpjes, illustraties en animaties op het gebied van biologie, voor het gebruik in het onderwijs en onderzoek. Het materiaal in de collectie is peer-reviewed door academische redacteurs en is gratis te downloaden. De online databank is een product van BioMed Central.
De trialperiode die Fontys Toegepaste Natuurwetenschappen heeft afgesproken met BioMed Central is verlengd tot en met 10 juli. Na die periode wordt bekeken of er een abonnement genomen wordt.

Young Sustainability Award (€ 5.000)

Duurzame ideeën gezocht voor de 2e editie van de Young Sustainability Award
Op 27 november 2008 zullen op het Nationaal Sustainability Congres in Amsterdam veel goede, duurzame initiatieven in de spotlights worden gezet. Niet alleen bestaande initiatieven, maar ook nieuwe ideeën krijgen aandacht: op het congres wordt voor de tweede keer de Young Sustainability Award uitgereikt.
In 2007 won het idee om etalageverlichting te verduurzamen. Hiervoor is vorig jaar in Eindhoven een pilot gestart. Dit jaar wordt de award, bestaande uit een geldprijs van € 5.000, opnieuw uitgereikt aan een student of jonge professional met een innovatief, slim, verrassend en haalbaar idee dat bij zou kunnen dragen aan een duurzamer Nederland.
De award wordt mede mogelijk gemaakt door de ASN Bank, DHV B.V. en Enviu.
ASN Bank heeft hierbij het prijzengeld beschikbaar gesteld. Daarnaast levert de bank een actieve bijdrage in de beoordeling van de inzendingen.

Het Hilversumse bedrijf Spill Group denkt zelfs Microsoft te kunnen verslaan

Conferentie persoonlijke relaties tussen mensen en robots

In Maastricht zal op 12 en 13 juni 2008 wordt dit congres gehouden. Volgens de Universiteit Maastricht de eerste conventie op dit gebied, persoonlijke relaties en robots.
Het programma bestaat uit 19 presentaties, gegeven door sprekers uit Oostenrijk, Canada, Ierland, Nederland, Singapore, Groot-Brittannië en de Verenigde Staten. Een van de presentaties heeft als titel: ‘Me Robot, You Jane’.
David Levy, in oktober 2007 gepromoveerd op het proefschrift ‘Intimate Relationships with Artificial Partners’, sluit een robot als liefdespartner niet uit in de toekomst. Naast zijn proefschrift heeft hij ook nog het boek geschreven “Love and Seks with Robots - The evolution of human - robot relationships”.

David Levy discusse how Artificial Intelligence devices play games, recognize visual input and speech, communicate, conduct sports, chauffeur, conduct search and rescue, perform surgery and help with medical diagnoses, work around the house and approach being humanoid. He concludes with well-grounded speculation about such advances as the DNA computer, nano-machines, models and applications of emotion, robot consciousness, and the development of robot rights and ethics.
Delftse robot loopt als een mens
Ir. Daan Hobbelen promoveert op vrijdag 30 mei aan de TU Delft op een nieuwe, zeer geavanceerde looprobot die hij heeft ontwikkeld. Zijn Flame-robot bootst de menselijke manier van lopen na.
Het laten lopen van een robot, met een menselijke loopbeweging, blijft lastig.
De TU Delft is een pionier in het maken van looprobots, waarbij de menselijke loopbeweging het uitgangspunt is.
Het menselijk lopen lijkt sterk op gecontroleerd voorover vallen. Met dit uitgangspunt kan de behoedzame, starre manier van lopen die op de industriële aanpak gebaseerde robots laten zien, worden vervangen door de meer vloeiende, energiezuinige loopbeweging van mensen. Hobbelens bijdrage bestaat daaruit, dat hij een manier heeft ontwikkeld om de stabiliteit van de loopbeweging te meten. Dat is bijzonder, omdat ‘voorover vallen’ traditioneel als instabiele beweging wordt gezien.
